PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A 2-alarm fire damaged an apartment near Portland State University on Thursday morning.

The fire was reported around 10 a.m. in the 1900 block of SW Park Avenue. Portland Fire and Rescue said it was caused by “improperly discarded smoking materials.”

The fire appeared to be contained to one apartment near the top floor, where a window was blown out. Fifty people inside the apartment were displaced temporarily but were able to get back inside when the fire was put out. The 2 occupants of the apartment will require alternate housing while their unit is restored.

Fire crews were able to respond within minutes because the fire station is only 2 blocks away. They quickly contained the flames.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. One person was treated for smoke inhalation.
