PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — An Aloha man was arrested early Thursday morning for stealing a bait package two blocks from his home.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office say they arrested 27-year-old Gary Medeiros near Southwest 170th Avenue and Southwest Jenkins Road after a bait package alarm went off. Deputies tracked down the package using GPS and found it inside Medeiros’ house.

The US Postal Service partnered with local law enforcement agencies to deploy bait packages to deter package theft.

Medieros is also accused of trying to damage the package to destroy evidence.

“They found the suspect, while they were trying to get him to come out, had actually been tampering with that box,” Washington County PIO Jeff Talbot said. “He had put some of the items in the box in the microwave and started the microwave.”

Medeiros was arrested for mail theft, theft in the second degree, tampering with physical evidence, criminal mischief in the third degree, and a parole violation. He is being held at the Washington County Jail.
