McMINNVILLE, Ore. (KOIN) — The death of a 7-week-old infant is being investigated as a homicide, the McMinnville police said Tuesday.

Emergency responders were called November 21 to an apartment at 1125 NE Irvine Street about the baby girl not breathing. She was rushed to Willamette Valley Medical Center and then airlifted to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital for treatment of what was described as “a traumatic brain injury.”

Three days later, the infant died.

McMinnville police said they became suspicious when the explanation given by the primary caregivers didn’t match the injuries the infant had. An examination determined the baby had abusive head trauma that led to her death.

Authorities have not said what the relationship is between the primary caregivers and the infant, but did say the baby lived at the apartment.

Neighbor Jessica Brown said it’s sad and “scary for being in this neighborhood, for being in such a good neighborhood.”

The case remains under investigation, and no names have been released. Anyone with information about what may have happened at that address on November 20-21 is asked to call the McMinnville PD tipline at 503.434.2337. The case number is 17-4521.
