PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The Meals on Wheels central kitchen in Multnomah Village is preparing 2500 Thanksgiving meals that include mashed potatoes, gravy and 750 pounds of turkey.
This food provides a healthy meal for about 5000 people daily, and Thanksgiving will be no different. The great Thanksgiving food will provide a meal for people over 60 who can’t produce one themselves, regardless of income.
Delivery is the “on wheels” part, but Meals on Wheels drivers are, in some cases, the only ones people who are house-bound will see on a given day.
“You live alone, you’re over 60 or you live at the end of a long driveway, if you don’t get out you don’t see anybody,” said Julie Piper of Meals on Wheels. “It’s often that Meals on Wheels driver that’s their only connection to that outside world.”
