PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A music teacher accused of trying to lure a minor to sexually abuse, rape and sodomize her is behind bars after a sting operation on November 8.
Mark Anthony Chervin is being held at the Multnomah County Detention Center in downtown Portland on $1.3 million bail after his arrest by officers with the Portland Police Bureau’s Sex Trafficking Unit.
PPB spokesperson Sgt. Chris Burley confirmed on Monday that Chervin was a private music teacher who taught in the communities of lower southwest Portland and in Lake Oswego. Burley said Chervin has no association with any school district.
During a search of his apartment, police found found berry-flavored wine coolers in Chervin’s refrigerator. Chervin told police he sent sexually explicit text messages, images and videos to a girl he thought was 15-year-old online through Facebook, according to court documents.
“He said he was teaching her about exploring her body sexually,” court documents said. “He also admitted talking about bringing [the minor] to his house to engage in oral sex and mutual masturbation.”
The investigation started in October when police created an undercover Facebook account. At some point, Chervin reportedly reached out to the undercover Facebook account, which pretended to be a 15-year-old girl.
“The communication that occurred during that initial contact became sexual in nature very quickly,” court documents said.
Chervin continued to communicate with the undercover Facebook account for approximately 12 days, according to court documents. There were reportedly more than 20 sexually explicit conversations, according to court documents.
Chervin allegedly sent numerous pornographic videos and photos to the undercover Facebook account and included text narratives with examples of what he and the 15-year-old could do once they were together.
On Nov. 7, Chervin went to a fast-food restaurant that was reportedly a meet up place for Chervin and the person he thought was going to be a 15-year-old girl, according to court documents. When Chervin arrived, police had the restaurant under surveillance. He was taken into custody without incident.
Chervin is charged with 2 counts of online sexual corruption of a child, 24 counts of luring a minor, and one count each of attempted rape, attempted sodomy and attempted sexual abuse.
Chevin’s attorney, Brad Kalbaugh, entered a not guilty plea on his behalf on Monday. His next court appearance is set for January 2018.
KOIN 6 News reached out to Kalbaugh for a statement but we have not heard back.
Investigators believe there may be additional victims. If you have information regarding Chervin or are a victim, please contact the Portland Police Bureau’s Sex Trafficking Unit at 503.823.4867.
