PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Portland State University officials and Portland Police confirmed early Tuesday that a man found dead just off campus following a reported shooting that was not affiliated with the university.
The investigation started around 1 a.m. when police responded to reports of a shooting near Southwest Montgomery and Southwest Park Avenue. When officers arrived, they found the man down on the ground in front of the Subway restaurant.
Officers started providing first aid, but the man, who is not a PSU student, died on scene. Police identified the man on Wednesday as Diego Tejeda-Manzo, a 21-year-old from Vancouver.
Police say there was a fight involving several people before the shooting. Witnesses reported seeing several people running after hearing gunfire.
“It sounded like a fight broke out, it sounded like a guy was maybe getting choked out or something,” witness Marcus Bush told KOIN 6 News.
“5 to 10 seconds after I heard that struggling, that’s when I heard the gunshots. It was about, you know, 5 shots. 5 to 6 shots,” Bush said. Police confirmed they found evidence of gunfire near the Subway restaurant.
All PSU buildings are open and classes are continuing as normal.
