PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Two teenagers were attacked in Grant Park on Halloween night when a group of 8-10 people in masks surrounded them, according to police.

Portland Police said the group — most likely teens as well — attacked the 2 male teens and stole their shoes and backpacks. The attackers were wearing bandannas and masks from characters of the movie — “The Purge.”

The teens were trick-or-treating and walking through the football field at Grant Park when the incident happened. A couple of friends were able to run away, however, 2 of the teens — from Portland and West Linn — couldn’t get away. The West Linn teen was struck with a bat and taken to a hospital.

The West Linn teen’s mom — Chandra Ashford — told KOIN 6 News her son and his friends didn’t know the attackers. According to Ashford, her son and his friend– who are under 16 years old — both sustained injuries.

She said their attackers seemed to be older teenagers with one of them wearing a pair of Air Jordans. Their masks appeared to look like a baby face and a devil, Ashford said.

There was also a red or burgundy van seen nearby.

Sgt. Chris Burley said, “It’s supposed to be a fun evening where you’re going out with friends and anytime an incident happens where a community members gets injured, it really puts a damper on what was supposed to be a happy day.”

Police have surveillance video, but aren’t sharing it yet — unless they believe the public can help identify the suspects. They’re currently asking for more footage of the area in and around Grant Park.
