OREGON CITY, Ore. (KOIN) – The murder suspect who reportedly confessed to Washington State Patrol appeared in court Wednesday where he learned he is being charged with murder and attempted aggravated murder.
Gregory R. Siegberg is being held in Clackamas County Jail.
Detectives say he shot and killed 51-year-old Melissa Vargas on Sunday. The medical examiner confirmed she died from a gunshot wound to the neck.
During the investigation, detectives with Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office spoke with 61-year-old Debra S. Kusch-Siegberg. She told them that Siegberg, her ex-husband, came downstairs and shot Vargas one time. KOIN 6 News learned Kusch-Siegberg and Siegberg were still living together.
Detectives say Siegberg then shot multiple times at his ex-wife as she ran from the residence to a neighbor’s house, where she called 911.
Siegberg fled the scene in his vehicle — a 2015 Subaru — before deputies arrived. Eventually, he was taken into custody by WSP after crashing his car. During the investigation into the crash, WSP said Siegberg flat out confessed to the homicide.
He is due back in court on December 7.
