Sergeant injured in altercation with motorcyclist

Police arrested a man after he fled on his motorcycle and then on foot

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A sergeant assigned to the Portland Police Bureau is recovering after being assaulted early Tuesday morning.

A police spokesperson said the sergeant who was injured attempted to pull over a man riding a stolen motorcycle recklessly near Southeast 83rd Avenue and Tolman Street. The man, later identified as 26-year-old James Gallaway, was carrying a gun.

Gallaway took off but the sergeant was able catch up and stop him. At some point after the stop, the sergeant was hit in the face with an unknown object. Gallaway then took off on foot.

The bureau’s Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) and the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) responded. Eventually officers saw Gallaway on a roof near Southeast 82nd Avenue and Bybee Street.

He was arrested and charged with Assaulting a Public Safety Officer, Interfering with a Police Officer, Criminal Trespass II, Felon in Possession of a Loaded Firearm, Carrying a Concealed Weapon and Escape II.
