Oregon campuses check protocols after Ohio State

Ohio State attack carried out by student using car, knife

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Within minutes of the attack at Ohio State University, officials alerted students to “Run. Hide. Fight,” accepted guidance in similar situations to run if you can, hide if you can’t and fight if you must.

At Portland State University, officers are armed with guns, a controversial decision made a year ago by the school’s board of trustees. There are also officers with guns at OHSU, UO and OSU.

Several of the schools have warning systems set up to deal with an active campus threat, including emails, phone calls and texts. PSU would also call on the Portland Police Bureau for help.

Students who spoke with KOIN 6 News on Monday said the Ohio State attack unnerved them. One student said she carries pepper spray with her, just part “of living in a big city.”

None of the school or university officials would go on-camera Monday, but they said they are reviewing their safety procedures.
