PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The holiday shopping season officially kicked off for 2016 on Thanksgiving night with “Grey Thursday.”
Hundreds braved the wet weather, some to stand in line for hours, for stores that opened early with Black Friday sales.
Richard Montanez from Vancouver got in line at the Jantzen Beach Best Buy around 1 a.m. Thursday morning.
“Going to get a couple of TVs, a 50” Samsung,” Montanez said.
He said people started lining up behind him around 8 a.m.
“I almost gave up,”Montanez said. “I almost threw in the towel but I stuck it through.”
Best Buy and Toys R Us were among the first to open, attracting those in search of a great deal for holiday gifts.
Best Buy shoppers cheered when the doors finally opened at 5 p.m., letting the wet, cold customers in to find their deals.
“I’m going to 4 different stores, so I’m kind of rushing between each one,” Erin Dewey said.
