PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A 42-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly stole multiple cars and swung a mini sledge hammer at people, police said.
Joseph Perez began his crime spree just before 7 p.m. Friday when he tried stealing a car in a Taco Bell parking lot on W Burnside Street, Portland Police Bureau said.
Officers who were called to the scene said Perez was armed with a handgun when he attempted to steal the victim’s car as she sat in the driveway. He reportedly left the area on foot and the victim was unharmed, according to police.
About 45 minutes later, reports came in of a carjacking on the 1400 block of NW 28th Avenue. Witnesses said the suspect had a gun when he stole someone’s car at the Stadium Fred Meyer on W Burnside Street.
Perez later allegedly stole a taxi in downtown Portland, police said.
He was arrested near the Jantzen Beach Target store where he was reportedly swinging a mini sledge hammer at people. Police said he had a replica firearm.
Perez was arrested and charged with 4 counts of second-degree robbery and 2 counts of second-degree attempted assault. He is expected to face more charges.
