PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The race to become Oregon’s Secretary of State is over with Democrat Brad Avakian conceding to Republican Dennis Richardson.

Perhaps the most interesting race in Oregon this cycle is the Secretary of State race. Jeanne Atkins succeeded Kate Brown when she became governor, but Brad Avakian won the Democratic nomination in the May primary.

Avakian faces Dennis Richardson, who lost to John Kitzhaber in the 2014 governor’s race. Paul Damian Wells is the Independent candidate in the race.

Avakian’s most recent job was the Oregon Commissioner of Labor and Industries. Richardson is a former state representative making another bid for statewide office.

Each candidate mounted a well-funded campaign that often seemed to stray outside the bounds of what a Secretary of State does. But, as Oregonians learned when Kitzhaber resigned, the Secretary of State is next-in-line to the governor.
