PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Ariana Marlene Cortez, 19, will appear in court on Monday to be arraigned on a grand jury indictment that charges her with murder.
The indictment was filed last week, according to court records.
The investigation started on October 9 when police responded to a duplex along Northeast 183rd in Gresham. When police got on scene, they found Otonio Hernandez-Duarte on the floor. He was bleeding heavily from the neck and was later pronounced dead, according to court documents.
Police say Cortez and Hernandez-Duarte had gotten into a fight and Cortez stabbed him during the fight. She told detectives that “once she grabbed the knife, she blacked out and doesn’t recall what occurred.”
According to the indictment, Cortez testified before the grand jury. Details of her testimony have not been released, but it is assumed that she testified using a self-defense theory.
Records show that Hernandez-Duarte and Cortez had been friends for about 1 year prior to the homicide.
