PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A 3-month old girl was critically injured after suffering abuse that could leave her in a vegetative stage.

On Wednesday, detectives assigned to the Child Abuse Team took the 17-year-old suspect into custody, without incident, at his family’s home in Northeast Portland.

He is now charged with first-degree assault and first-degree criminal mistreatment. Police are not releasing specific details about how the girl was hurt.

We’ve confirmed the identity of the suspect, but due to his age and relationship to the victim, we are not identifying him.

We’ve learned the teen is being held at the Multnomah County Donald E. Long Juvenile Detention Home.

Officials tell us that when the alleged abuse occurred in October, the victim was 10-weeks old. She was treated at OHSU with life-threatening injuries, but officials, citing medical privacy laws, declined to comment on the girl’s current condition.

According to investigators, the victim and suspect are family members.

The suspect in the case is scheduled to appear in court later this month.
