PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A father could face charges for accidentally shooting 2 of his young children in a hunting accident east of Sweet Home.
The 27-year-old was hunting with his 3 children and 54-year-old father near Green Peter Dam about 10 miles from Sweet Home, Linn County Sheriff Bruce Riley said.
At one point he stopped his truck and ran out with his rifle in tow because he thought he saw a deer, the sheriff said.
“As he’s walking back to his truck his 30 caliber rifle discharges and it pierces the door of the pickup and travels through the door which causes some shrapnel and things to go inside and actually injure 2 of his kids,” Sheriff Riley explained.
The 2-year-old sustained a serious leg injury and the 4-year-old was struck in the shin. One of the children is still in the hospital, KOIN 6 News learned.
Authorities haven’t charged the father with any crimes.
In order to prove it was a criminal act, Sheriff Riley says detectives would need to find evidence of recklessness or negligence, or possibly the use of a controlled substance.
“We’re still investigating and it will be referred to the district attorney for possible grand jury review,” Sheriff Riley said.
