CORVALLIS, Ore. (KOIN) — A Corvallis man died and his passenger injured when the Mercedes they were in hit a chain link fence and then a utility pole near Crescent Valley High School.

The crash in the early hours of Sunday killed 22-year-old Rigoberto Ruiz. Investigators said he was driving too fast along NW Highland Drive when he didn’t take a curve near the high school.

The 1997 Mercedes was nearly severed in half.

Ismael Ramirez-Martinez, 23, was able to get out of the car before first responders got to the scene. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of his injuries.

The crash remains under investigation, and the Benton County Sheriff’s Office said both speed and alcohol were factors.
