A tow truck was pulling the unoccupied car when it was high-centered and got stuck on the track.

Patrick Lynch with Oregon City Police said the car was on the tracks before the arms came down.

“There was no indication of any issue with the tow truck or the driver or anything like that. It just  happened to get high-centered at the exact time the train was coming,” Lynch told KOIN 6 News.

The Amtrak train was able to brake but had too much momentum to stop before it could avoid hitting the car.

“[Trains] do slow down through town but still the impact of the train on the car was pretty significant, so the car was totaled,” Lynch said.

No one was in the car when it was hit and no one was injured. The train experienced a delay of a few hours but was back on its way after the car was cleared.

“It was totally a freak accident,” Lynch said. “It was just a perfect storm of bad timing.”
