Is this election driving up gun sales?

Upcoming elections can certainly contribute

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A lot of different things factor into whether guns sales go up or down in a given time frame.

And upcoming elections can certainly contribute, though that’s especially true after the results are in.

Warren Lacasse and Karl Durkeheimer, owners of The Gun Room aren’t short on business with election night less than two weeks away.

“Sales are normal, but I can tell you we can see things getting ready to roll,” said Lacasse.

And election anxiety is exactly why customer Ian Vidovic said he’s stocking up on ammunition.

“I’d rather be safe than sorry and get it now while I can before I can’t,” said Vidovic.

He continued, “I’ve been begging my mom to get a handgun before the election.”

Gun rights advocates worry about a Hillary Clinton presidency leading to tougher gun laws and increased restrictions on firearms.

Still, Durkheimer isn’t ready to say his sales increase is directly tied to that.

“October 2016 [and] we have eclipsed October 2015 with what, 4 days left in the month, something like that?” said Durkheimer

The FBI’s criminal background check system processed nearly 2 million checks in September, an 11% year-over-year increase to mark a new record for the month.

“I can tell you if this election goes wrong, Smith and Wesson is going to have record profits for the next 4 years,” said Lacasse.

Both Lacasse and Durkheimer say after gun control advocates win elections, sales spike in their stores.

Though people like Vidovic aren’t waiting for the ballots to be counted.

“It’s a crazy election. Obviously I’m nervous,” said Vidovic.
