PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A speeding driver ended up arrested and facing federal charges when Portland police said they found around 20 pounds of cocaine inside a hidden compartment in a BMW.

The traffic stop began around 2:30 p.m. Friday on northbound I-5 near the Corbett Avenue exit, police said. Mauricio Gomez Alvarez was driving the 2003 BMW X5 when he was pulled over for speeding.

Alvarez, another adult and a child were in the car, and police said they were given permission to search the BMW with a drug-sniffing dog.

The dog found the cocaine, valued at $320,000.

The 30-year-old Alvarez was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on federal charges. More charges are pending, officials said.
