Buttercup at Oregon Zoo: 12 feet and growing

The 2-year-old male Masai giraffe came to the Oregon Zoo from Santa Barbara

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Say hello to Buttercup.

The 2-year-old male Masai giraffe came to the Oregon Zoo from Santa Barbara, already 12-feet tall and growing fast.

He’ll be spending his time in the zoo’s Africa Savanna habitat after taking about a month to adjust to his new surroundings.

Eventually, Buttercup will hang out with Bakari and Desi and the smaller animals in that habitat.

Masai giraffes can grow to 18 feet tall and are the tallest mammals on earth. Zoo officials said Masai giraffes can have tongues that are 21 inches long, can run as fast as 35 mph and eat up to 75 pounds a day of leaves and brush.
