PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Crews suspended their search for a missing 21-year-old woman Friday night after spending the day looking for her in the Gorge. The search will continue Saturday morning at Toothrock Trailhead.
Anna Schmidt was reported missing Wednesday after her mother, Michelle Schmidt, flew into town from Salt Lake City for a mother-daughter camping trip. Anna’s roommate hadn’t seen her since Sunday, according to Portland Police Bureau.
Anna’s car was found Thursday off exit 40 on I-84 EB near the Bonneville Dam in the Columbia River Gorge. PPB Sgt. Pete Simpson said her car appeared to have been broken into, but it’s unclear what was stolen.
Her last phone ping was in that general area, Sgt. Simpson told KOIN 6 News.
Search and rescue crews spent Friday looking for her near the Toothrock Trailhead.
Anna’s family said she enjoys hiking and recently bought a new tent and backpack.
“We love nature so much, but Annie in particular,” Michelle said.
Her father, Jon Schmidt, said she may have been out trying to set up her new tent, but the family doesn’t believe she planned to stay overnight by herself.
“She wasn’t prepared, she hadn’t taken any of her equipment,” Michelle said. “We’re not sure what happened to her but we think that she’s either injured or lost.”
Jon said Anna sent a Snapchat sometime Saturday or Sunday showing where she was. He’s currently working with authorities to figure out how they can retrieve it.
Anna moved to Portland from Salt Lake City in July for a new job. Her father is a member in the Utah-based group, The Piano Guys.
Investigators said there are no signs of foul play in the case.
“We’ve just got to go find our Annie,” Michelle said at the trailhead.
Anna is described as 5’4″ tall, 125 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes.
Anyone who may have seen her while hiking in the Gorge is asked to email Detective Heidi Helwig. Her family is making the same plea.
“If anyone was up here hiking Sunday afternoon, please take a look at the picture. If you know anyone who was hiking here, have them take a look at her picture” Jon said.
If you have information on her current whereabouts call 911.
