PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A suspect in a liquor store robbery was hospitalized and died after police say he took hostages and shot himself.

The man, later identified as Gerald Armand Thompson of Eugene, walked into Santiam Liquor, 2530 SE Pacific Boulevard, around 11:20 a.m. The 62-year-old was armed and he took hostages inside the store, Albany police said.

Several blocks were evacuated and police set up a perimeter. About 25 minutes after the situation began, officers heard 2 shots from inside the store.

Two hostages came out and told police Thompson shot himself.

A SWAT team arrived and found Thompson inside. He was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis where police later said he died.
