NEWPORT, Ore. (KOIN) — A 71-year-old man known to his family and friends as Dan was found dead Friday afternoon near Astoria in what the Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office said is a suspicious death.

Howard Daniel Vinge’s body was found wrapped in a material near US Highway 30 about 4 miles east of Astoria, authorities said. The cause of death has not been released.

He was last seen at his Agate Beach home in the middle of September, but 2 of his vehicles — a maroon Lincoln Continental and a white Allegro Bay motorhome — were spotted September 24.

Both vehicles have Oregon license plates. The Lincoln’s plate is 045-FVN, while the plate on the motorhome is HC-33885.

Investigators found his motorhome along Highway 26 and Highway 53 outside of Seaside.

A man who lives close to where Vinge’s motorhome was found told KOIN 6 News he saw a man and woman drive the motorhome there about 5 or 6 days ago. He added they eventually left in a car that was attached on a trailer.

Investigators would like to talk with anyone who had contact with Vinge anytime in September.

Clatsop County Detective J. Ryan Humphrey can be reached at 503.325.2061.
