PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — He stands 31 feet tall and he needs paint. Maybe some internal work.

The legend of Paul Bunyan

He’s Paul Bunyan — the mythical lumberjack from early American folklore — and he stands at the entrance of Portland’s Kenton neighborhood at North Interstate and Denver.

The steel and concrete statue was built by the neighborhood Boy Scout troop for the Oregon Centennial Expo of 1959. He began as a temporary exhibit,  but he’s now on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Kenton Neighborhood Association is leading the efforts to collect enough money to restore Paul Bunyan to its previous glory.
