PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Two people were arrested by police after the driver rammed a police car, drove on a sidewalk, then went the wrong way on SW 4th Avenue before colliding with 3 other cars in front of City Hall.
The incident began around 1:30 p.m. when Portland police tried to contact an intoxicated person sitting inside a running car in a parking lot at 2079 W. Burnside, police said.
The driver, later identified as Robert D. Goulart, backed into the police car, took off and headed east. A police officer stopped the pursuit because of the erratic driving, officials said.
But other officers were notified and after the driver hit another car on SW 4th, he turned onto Jefferson before crashing near SW 3rd.
Goulart tried to run away, but a passerby detained him until police got there.
The 29-year-old faces a total of 16 charges for failing to perform the duties of a driver, 2nd-degree criminal mischief, DUII, trying to elude on foot and attempted assault of a public safety officer.
Sophia Gohl, 23, was also arrested. She was with Goulart during the incident, but was arrested on an outstanding warrant.
Earlier reports that a pedestrian may have been hit near Portland City Hall proved to be unfounded.
