PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A Portland middle school teacher is raising money to buy new bikes for students after a thief reportedly stole them from campus.

Five George Middle School students who went to retrieve their bikes after school on Monday were upset to find someone had cut off their locks and stolen them.

Teacher Brett Bigham started a GoFundMe page to help replace the bikes.

“It was my first day teaching at the school and I was introduced to one of the young men who had lost his bike. It was his 14th birthday and he did his best just to smile and not let it bother him,” Bigham wrote. “But it bothers me… a kid should feel safe at school and this theft has left many of the kids not only worried but devalued.”

Bigham said he understands that “being robbed of your most precious belongings is never easy.” That’s why he wants to raise money to replace the 5 stolen bikes and invest in a better storage system, like a bike cage, so this doesn’t happen again.
