PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The body of a 52-year-old man was recovered from the Columbia River Wednesday, days after his boat was found adrift, deputies said.

The Coast Guard initiated a search after an unmanned boat was spotted on the Columbia River Sunday morning. Sheriff’s deputies and firefighters helped search the water for the boat’s owner, but no one was found.

On Wednesday, reports came in of a body floating on the Columbia River near the east tip of McGuire Island, Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said.

Authorities recovered the body, later identified as Brian Louis Schmitz of Sandy.

The medical examiner determined he died as a result of accidental drowning.
