PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A 17-year-old boy has been charged with murder after a shooting in Boardman, according to prosecutors.

David Alexander Alvarez is charged with one count of murder and two counts of unlawful use of a weapon. Alvarez is now being held at a detention center in The Dalles.

The investigation started September 11 when police responded to reports of a shooting at a trailer park in the 600 block of Wilson Street. Alvarez is accused of shooting 27-year-old Evencio Salas Birrueta.

Police said Salas was shot near his shoulder. Officers immediately began lifesaving measures, but those efforts were unsuccessful, and Salas was pronounced dead by emergency medical personnel.

Boardman Police Chief Rick Stokoe said Alvarez turned himself into law enforcement in Cowlitz County on Monday night.

The case remains under investigation, and police have not said if Alvarez and Birrueta knew each other prior to the shooting.

KOIN 6 News is identifying Alvarez because he is charged as an adult under the state’s Ballot Measure 11 statue.

The DA’s Office in Murrow County said the investigation is still ongoing and declined to comment on specific details of the case.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact the Boardman Police Department at 541-481-6071.
