CANBY, Ore. (KOIN) — An 11-year-old boy drowned Sunday afternoon while playing in the water at Canby Community Park, Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies were called to the park at 1348 S Berg Parkway just after 5 p.m.

Skyler Thomas, who allegedly didn’t know how to swim and wasn’t wearing a life jacket, was playing in the river when he disappeared, deputies said. His family, residents of Newberg, was nearby and one of his relatives found him submerged in the water minutes after he went under.

“The family turned away for a few seconds and he was gone,” marine patrol deputy Morgan Guthner said. ” We keep coming to these tragedies… If your kids don’t know how to swim they need to be wearing life jackets.”

Medical crews tried reviving the boy but he was pronounced dead on the scene.
