Rowling's final novel about the boy wizard, Harry has returned, on the stage and the page - and he's still producing commercial alchemy. Not just because it’s Harry and author JK Rowling’s birthday, but because for the first time in 9 years and 10 days, a new ‘Harry Potter’ book will hit shelves.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,’ a new play by Jack Thorne premiered in London on July 31 (London time) and the script of the play hits stores at midnight.

Release parties are happening at bookstores across the country, including at Portland area Powell’s and Barnes and Noble locations. Scholastic created a website for fans to find release parties in their city.

The play picks up where Rowling’s story ended — 19 years after Harry Potter defeats Lord Voldemort. Now the characters we know and love have their own children, who are off at Hogwarts.

While Rowling did not write the play, it is based on a story by Rowling, Thorne and director John Tiffany. It’s being called “the eighth story in the Harry Potter series.”

The book has topped Amazon’s best seller list and is the most pre-ordered book at Barnes and Noble since the last Harry Potter novel, ‘Harry Potter and the Dealthy Hallows’ was released on July 21, 2007.

July 31 is also Harry Potter and Rowling’s birthday.
