POLK CO., Ore. (KOIN) — A Polk County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a suspect July 5 on Highway 22 west of Salem, officials told KOIN 6 News.

Police were initially called to an apartment complex on reports of a man who was trespassing and harassing an ex-girlfriend, Oregon State Police said.

The man, later identified as 29-year-old Joshua Bolster, reportedly pulled out a knife during a confrontation with a resident.

Police set out to find Bolster and arrest him for trespassing and menacing.

Local sheriff’s deputies stopped the suspect while he was driving on Highway 22 near Doaksferry Road, OSP said. A confrontation ensued and authorities reportedly used less lethal force before shooting and injuring Bolster.

The deputy involved in the fatal shooting was 28-year-old Casey Gibson, who has about 3 years of law enforcement experience.

Bolster was taken to Salem Hospital for treatment where he later died.

The investigation is ongoing.
