Bicyclist struck, critically injured on Hwy 99W

The man on the bike was not wearing a helmet and has life-threatening injuries

MCMINNVILLE, Ore. (KOIN) — A bicyclist was critically injured after a collision with a pickup truck on Hwy 99W Friday morning.

According to Oregon State Police, a Dodge Ram pulling a utility trailer was traveling south on Hwy 99W when Joseph Bowerman rode his bike into the southbound lane. The truck driver swerved into the guardrail in an attempt to avoid the biker, but did hit him.

The crash happened near milepost 35 and the intersection with Hwy 47 just before 9:49 a.m.

Bowerman, 37, was taken to the hospital by air ambulance with life-threatening injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.

The truck driver was not injured and is cooperating with the investigation.

Police heard reports of possible witnesses who stopped to help. One man wearing a Verizon shirt who might be a Verizon store employee was seen there.
