PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — June 22 is National Onion Ring Day, and to celebrate, one restaurant owner is giving away freebies.
Onion rings at Portland’s 3 RingSide restaurants are free with a meal Wednesday.
Craig Peterson, one of the third-generation family owners of the RingSide restaurants, says the legendary onion rings started out as a way to attract and keep bar customers.
“They needed to come up with something to keep them in the lounge a little bit longer and peanuts wasn’t going to work,” Peterson said. “So why don’t we do something that has a little bit of salt in the flavor profile to it that’ll maybe keep them at the lounge for maybe that second beer or second glass of wine.”
The idea worked and has hung around since Peterson’s grandfather first thought of it.
