Arrest made for serious injury crash in NE Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A 31-year-old man was seriously injured Tuesday night in crash at NE 33rd and Emerson Street.

Officers found a crashed Toyota Corolla and Cadillac Escalade with the Corolla driver seriously injured inside his car. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance and is expected to survive his injuries.

The driver and passenger of the Escalade walked away from the scene but were found and detained not far away. The driver, 31-year-old Matthew Nelson was booked into the Multnomah County Jail Wednesday morning on charges of assault, DUII, failure to perform the duties of a driver (hit and run), reckless driving, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief. He was also held on an outstanding warrant.

According to the investigation, Nelson was driving north on 33rd Ave. and was speeding when he crashed into the Corolla. Investigators believe Nelson was under the influence of marijuana during the crash.

The initial press release from Portland Police incorrectly listed the injured person as a woman.
