PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Famous for only taking cash, checks or money orders, the Oregon DMV will start taking debit and credit card payments at its 60 offices.

The systems will be installed over the next 4 months, officials said. A pilot program was deemed “successful” and the decision was made to go with plastic.

There have been ATMs at the busiest DMV offices and credit/debit payments were taken for online vehicle registration since 2004. But people who went to a DMV office needed to have cash or a check.

All 60 offices should be up and running for credit/debit transactions by the end of September.
