HILLSBORO, Ore. (KOIN) — Warm weather this spring is pushing up strawberry season a few weeks ahead of schedule.
Hood strawberries are typically ready around June 1 with the season lasting through the month.
Rich Hildner with Smith Berry Barn in Hillsboro says they’ll begin picking their strawberries next week. He says there could be an upside to the early harvest.
“Usually in May and early June it’s not going to get too hot, so it might extend that season a little bit,” Hildner said. “When they’re ripe [the] heat will perish them.”
Strawberries are usually the first pickable berry of the season. Hildner says this year’s harvest wasn’t heavily diluted so he’s expecting it to be especially sweet.
Smith Berry Barn will start picking about 2,000 pounds of strawberries next week.
