CLACKAMAS COUNTY, Ore. (AP) — Authorities say a Portland police officer has been arrested on drunken driving charges after a crash in Clackamas County.
The crash happened at a roundabout in Happy Valley Monday afternoon.
Portland Police say Officer Daniel Chastain was driving a City of Portland vehicle Monday while “on call” but off duty when he was involved in a collision. According to investigators, he was speeding and crashed into a red pickup truck, sending his car over the curb and through some bushes. Chastain’s car landed upside down.
Police said in a news release alcohol was a factor in the crash.
Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Chastain on charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants, reckless driving, reckless endangerment and first-degree criminal mischief. He was taken to a hospital, then cited and released. He was never booked into jail.
Some are questioning if Chastain got special treatment.
“It doesn’t look like that because it sounds like he was taken to the hospital and when someone is taken to the hospital it’s because they were hurt and the hospital is not going to discharge them and take them to the jail or they would be booked,” says Edward Kroll, a criminal defense attorney.
Chastain has worked for the Portland Police Bureau for 17 years and was assigned to the tactical operations division. He’s been placed on paid administrative leave while the case proceeds.
The driver of the red pickup wasn’t injured.
