PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Five people were rushed to area hospitals early Friday morning after a major crash in Southeast Portland.

At least one person has suffered potentially life-threatening injuries.

The crash happened at Southeast 92nd and Southeast Holgate, according to Portland Fire Lt. Rich Chatman.

Portland Police Sgt. Pete Simpson said an officer spotted a speeding car in the area of Southeast 94th and Southeast Holgate. The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the tan Honda Accord, but the driver sped away. The driver of the speeding vehicle ran a red light at Southeast 92 and Holgate and collided with two other cars, a Toyota FJ Cruiser and a red Honda Civic.

Officers later learned that the speeding Honda Accord had been reported as stolen. The driver of that car, 28-year-old Christopher Schmidt, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. His 2 passengers were also hurt. Amanda Atkinson, 25, has serious injuries and Theodore Swan, 49, was taken to the hospital but later died.
