PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A group of tents caught fire in a homeless camp beneath the Hawthorne Bridge Thursday afternoon, officials confirmed to KOIN 6 News.

Firefighters were called to the area of SE Water Avenue and SE Hawthorne Boulevard where they found 3-5 tents engulfed in flames, Portland Fire & Rescue said.

Neighbors and people passing by the camp said they heard explosions that sounded like fireworks just before the fire broke out, according to PF&R.

Firefighters found 2 small propane fuel cylinders at the scene.

They suspect someone playing with the propane tanks started the fire.

The fire was quickly put out and no injuries were reported.
