BANDON, Ore. (KOIN) — A derelict boat that may have originated from the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan was recovered Tuesday in Coos Bay.

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew spotted a portion of the boat, which is 16-feet long and 9-feet wide, towards the southern end of the coast on March 16.

The small section of the boat landed north of Coos Bay and was removed from the beach on Tuesday, Oregon Parks and Recreation Dept. said.

Biologists removed algae samples, a live crab and mollusks to study.

A local contractor transported the debris to a landfill.

Federal officials in the U.S. and Japan will research the boat’s identification number.
