PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Authorities identified a man who died when his car plunged into the Columbia River just over a month ago.

Weldu Yemane Misgna, 38, was the only person in the car when it left the roadway near Marine Drive and NE 159th on February 18, Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said.

Misgna’s death was caused by accidental drowning, deputies said.

Recovery efforts went on for several hours on the day of the crash, but crews said Misgna’s body escaped the car, possibly through an undetected open window.

The water’s temperature was reportedly 42 degrees at the time.
