PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A Washington state family’s vacation to Phoenix stopped before it began when their 7-year-old’s allergic reaction to dogs on the plane got them booted.

KING TV in Seattle reports the Alvarado family was on board an Allegiant Air flight to Phoenix when the boy began to get itchy and hives appeared.

The boy’s reaction to the dogs aboard delayed the flight, and the flight crew said they would have to deboard. The family understood that — but didn’t understand the reaction of the passengers.

They clapped when the family left.

The father, George Alvarado, is battling stage 4 throat cancer and the trip was specially planned.

Allegiant Air has apologized to the family.
