PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A fight between 2 men over the sale of a car ended in gunfire, with one hospitalized and the other in jail.

According to court documents, Steven Michael Owens initially told police the gun accidentally discharged when he dropped it, shooting the other man in the abdomen. Police arrived in the 4400 block of SE Umatilla Street and took him to the hospital.

Owens said the man came over earlier and began to fight over money owed after a car was sold, police said. The other man attacked him outside the residence and injured his face, Owens said.

During the fight, Owens, 42, went back to the home and got his .44 pistol, court records show. He claimed that he shot when the other man “lunged” at him.

The victim told police he tried to knock the gun away when Owens pointed it at him, which caused the gun to discharge.

Owens was arrested Thursday night, and prosecutors charged him with one count of 2nd-degree assault. He appeared in court on Friday for the first time and entered a plea of not guilty.
