Portland Police will be watching you on Wednesday, February 17 around the area of SE 82nd and Division. Officers will conduct a crosswalk enforcement between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to raise awareness of pedestrian safety and Oregon traffic laws. The area of SE 82nd and Division is a high crash corridor. There were 24 pedestrian crashes there from 2004 to 2015. Two of those crashes resulted in two pedestrian deaths.
A crosswalk enforcement like the one coming up is part of the City of Portland’s effort to reach its Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries. Police will remind drivers to stop for pedestrians and encourage people walking to cross at street corners.
In late February, crews will start construction on a safety project for SE 82nd between Burnside and Division. Workers plan to complete the project in the Fall and will improve safety and traffic flow. Construction will require day and night single lane closures on 82nd, but not during the hours of 6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m. on weekdays. Crews will replace outdated traffic signals, add sidewalk curb ramps, and install new lighting and reflective signs.
