Suspect in gunfight with homeowner nabbed in Salem

SALEM, Ore. (KOIN) — A burglar accused of breaking into a Salem home and assaulting a man on December 10 was arrested Monday morning, police said.

Uriel Osornio Jr. was apprehended by police in a relative’s home in south Salem. He is charged with first degree robbery, first degree burglary, first degree theft, first degree assault and attempted aggravated murder.

Additional charges are expected as the investigation continues.

The incident occurred on the 5500 block of 8th Avenue SE where a 64-year-old man found a burglar inside his home, according to Salem Police Dept.

An exchange of gunfire ensued, and the homeowner sustained a non-life-threatening injury.

SWAT officers searched the area and Sumpter Elementary School was placed on lockdown. Some locals were contacted and told to stay in their homes as the search continued.
