CLATSKANIE, Ore. (KOIN) — A woman died Wednesday afternoon when a car disappeared in high water on a Clatskanie road, officials confirmed.

Sources tell KOIN 6 News an elderly couple bypassed a ‘Road Closed’ sign at Lost Creek Road and Highway 30. It was closed due to several feet of standing water.

The Jeep Cherokee stalled and eventually became submerged into about 12 feet of water.

As the car sank, 82-year-old Richard Forrest, was able to escape through the sunroof, but his wife did not come out. 72-year-old Penny Forrest was found dead inside the vehicle after it was recovered from the water.

A rescue call came in around 1:40 p.m., Jeff Pricher with Scappoose Fire District said.

Rescue crews used an inflatable raft to locate the fully submerged car.
