DESCHUTES CO., Ore. (KOIN) — Two people died Tuesday afternoon when a military-style tank exploded at a public firing range off Hwy 20 near Bend, authorities confirmed.

The explosion in a World War II era tank happened at the Central Oregon Shooting Sports Association shortly after 3 p.m., Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office said.

A film crew was there when the tank exploded, filming the tank destroyer firing rounds, investigators said. The video was to be used in a future exhibit.

On Wednesday, two Oregon City residents were identified as the victims. Steven Todd Preston, 51, and Tyler Lee, 22, were handling an explosive when it blew up, police said.

Autopsies are scheduled later this week.
