The Columbian newspaper reports Vancouver police plan to buy a new dog to add to their force by spring.

Ike, a 6-year-old Belgian Malinois who died last month, was answering a suspicious person call on Sept. 1 with Officer Jack Anderson. Jackie Karuo has been charged with a number of crimes, including harming a police dog.

A police dog can cost between $8,000 and $10,000. That doesn’t include training, veterinary and other expenses.

Police spokeswoman Kim Kapp says new police dogs require about 400 hours of training.
