PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Community members are mourning the loss of a local musician who was killed after being hit by a car in the Kern neighborhood early Sunday morning.
When officers arrived at SE 29th and Stark Street around 2 a.m. they found 34-year-old Christopher Brian Chandler with traumatic injuries.
He was taken to a local hospital for treatment, but died a few hours later.
According to witnesses, the driver was heading west on Stark Street when the crash occurred. He did not stay at the scene.
“I’m shocked, I mean who would do this?” Kristi Nelson said. “Who would drive away and not look back? I mean, they took a life and a very, very special life.”
Witnesses told KOIN 6 News Chandler was helping a friend carry band gear right before he was fatally hit. He was reportedly watching a live band at a local music venue earlier in the night.
“The music and his friends, that’s what he lived for,” she said. “Chris was such a beautiful soul… very genuine music lover, a musician himself, a huge supporter of his friends and family.”
The suspect was driving a white, mid-2000s Honda Civic 4-door, with a possible license plate of IVD-1036, but the state is not known. The car possibly has front end damage and a broken windshield.
Police said the driver is described as a white man with short, possibly blonde hair.
